Publish With Us

"The stated purpose of Solution Tree is to advance the work of our authors."
-Jeff Jones, President

Why should I publish with Solution Tree?

Every resource Solution Tree offers is an outgrowth of our dedication to students and the professionals who help them. When you publish with Solution Tree, you gain a strong and growing partner with a commitment to being the premier provider of solutions in the areas of at-risk youth and school improvement for educators, counselors, administrators, and others in North America.

Our authors benefit from the integrity, responsiveness, and innovation that have made Solution Tree a uniquely successful educational services provider:

Integrity—Our commitment to your work includes a commitment to fully develop your resource through thoughtful and in-depth collaboration with editorial and design professionals. The care, integrity, and personal attention we will give you and your work will offer you a firsthand understanding of why so many of our authors choose to publish with us again.

Responsiveness—Our commitment to selecting the best—instead of the most—manuscripts for publication gives Solution Tree the ability to be highly responsive to your needs as an author while your resource is developed. This responsiveness continues after publication as a genuine and ongoing interest in your professional development.

Innovation—Our active interest in your work over the long term gives you the possibility of pursuing other innovative ways of sharing your expertise with educators. A number of Solution Tree authors have collaborated with us in creating video resources, professional development workshops, institute events, and other resources and services based on their work. Few educational publishers have the ability to consider these opportunities for their authors.

How can I become a Solution Tree author?

First, familiarize yourself with Solution Tree's mission and resource line. Our primary customers are K-12 educators, administrators, counselors, and others who work with youth. Our books are pragmatic, research-based, and focused on action and solutions. Review our website or catalog, and ask yourself:

  • Would my manuscript fit within Solution Tree's current offerings? How?
  • Does my manuscript speak to the same audience?
  • Is my manuscript based on best practices and current, objective research in the fileld of education?

If you can answer yes to these questions, get in touch with us! Send the following materials to our Acquisitions Team:

  1. Current resumes or vitae for each contributing author
  2. A focused, professional cover letter
  3. One of the following:
    • A completed, unpublished manuscript (see Manuscript Preparation Guidelines) OR
    • A detailed outline or an annotated table of contents (one paragraph describing each chapter) and two or more completed chapters that represent what is unique and valuable about your manuscript.
  4. A formal proposal that defines the following:
    • Purpose--The main message of your manuscript
    • Rationale--Why this book is needed
    • Audience--Who will read this book
    • Research Basis--What sources you will cite
    • Practicality--What strategies and solutions you offer
    • Competing Titles--Any existing publications that address the same topic and audience
    • Other publishers--Any other publishers reviewing this manuscript
    • Experience--Your personal experience with this issue

Additional Potential--Your ability and interest (current and/or future) to provide training, professional development, or additional print resources to support this one

Your proposal will be carefully and confidentially reviewed within three months.

How does Solution Tree evaluate a manuscript?

Our reviewers consider the following criteria:

  1. Is it research-based?
Is your resource grounded in recent, relevant research? Is this research cited clearly within the resource?
  2. Is it practical?
Does your submission specify clear, direct actions that will solve readers' problems efficiently? Is it organized well? Can readers understand and apply its principles without any additional training or interpretation?
  3. Is it marketable?
The best resource cannot succeed unless sufficient demand exists for it. Is the focus of your submission broad enough to attract a diverse readership? Does your resource have potential to be supported through speaking engagements, professional development, and other resources?
  4. Is it well written?
Our editorial staff will help develop all accepted resources, but every submission must meet minimum standards of clarity, organization, and grammar.
  5. Is the author a recognized authority in the field?
Have you and your coauthors published other works on the same topic, or do you have firsthand experience as practitioners or researchers in the field your manuscript addresses? What other experience qualifies you to write authoritatively on this topic?
  6. Does the author respond to editorial advice and direction?
If we ask for a revised proposal, we will carefully examine how thoroughly and professionally you address the editorial suggestions.

Always proofread and spellcheck your manuscript. Ask a supportive colleague or friend to read your manuscript and cover letter with a critical eye to help identify rough spots and find ways to make them more convincing. Send complete chapters rather than tentative notes, and include complete references with corresponding in-text citations. If you need further information or advice, do not hesitate to contact us.
