Nothing Happens Until People Are Having Fun

People of all ages thrive when their work is appreciated. In a professional learning community (PLC), this fact becomes a central part of the culture in a sustained, public celebration of achievement. In this breakout session from the Minneapolis PLC at Work™ institute on June 26, 2009, Lillie G. Jessie shares how to create a school environment and culture that celebrates learning at the highest levels. She argues that learning is deeper and longer lasting when students enjoy school and are engaged in their work. With the same sense of fun she promotes, Lillie offers inventive strategies for fostering joyful student learning. She addresses the following topics:

• What a school’s physical environment communicates about its mission and character
• Competition and collaboration, their differences, and how each can be used to the best effect
• Types of rewards and punishments and their proper roles in a PLC
• How to share and celebrate data among teachers and staff
