Dennis King, EdD, district assistant superintendent of school improvement for the Blue Valley School District in Overland Park, Kansas, is one of the crucial driving forces behind an impressive example of effective school improvement. This district has built professional learning communities (PLCs) in all of its 31 schools (4 high schools, 8 middle schools, and 19 elementary schools). Dr. King connects with educators as a fellow practitioner, inviting participants in his presentations to explore PLC strategies and develop a plan that meets their unique needs. Dr. King has devoted 18 of his 24-year career to administrative positions, including assistant principal, principal, and executive director of school improvement.
Under his leadership, the 1,300 students and 120 staff members of Blue Valley High School (BVHS) have realigned their mission and vision to fit the PLC model. Resulting gains on national, state, and local assessments have been tremendous; the school has received the Standard of Excellence in math, reading, and writing. Additionally, BVHS was one of 12 schools in the country (and one of 4 high schools) to participate in the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) initiative 12 Under 12. Schools in this program collaborate with the NSDC to meet 100 percent proficiency in less than 12 years or by 2014, as established by No Child Left Behind legislation.
The success of BVHS is only part of a stunning story that illuminates the lasting positive impacts of PLCs. The entire school district aligned its strategic plan to support the PLC model. As a leader in the Department of School Improvement, Dr. King played a major role in developing this districtwide initiative. In turn, educators at the school level responded by aligning their foundation of principles, creating collaborative teams, and developing school-based interventions that focus on results.
Dr. King earned a doctorate from St. Louis University.
